Course Overview

This AIUM-GUSI 2-Day Introduction to Point-of-Care Ultrasound Course is an engaging, transformative learning experience led by expert POCUS educators with crisp, clinician-to-clinician teaching that distills POCUS learning to the highest-yield, focused sonographic questions that impact medical decision-making and patient care. With a strong emphasis on hands-on scanning practice time and clinical integration, participants will gain the confidence and skills needed to apply POCUS effectively in their daily practice across various medical settings

Dr. Mena Ramos is co-founder and co-CEO of Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI). As a physician, entrepreneur, health & medtech consultant, she specializes in healthcare innovation that bridges entrenched silos through meaningful workflow re-engineering with high tech/high touch digital tools to save time, lives, and cost. Dr. Ramos is a strong advocate for POCUS adoption across the continuum of care with a particular emphasis in primary care and global health. She co-wrote the original POCUS guidelines for the American Association of Family Practice (AAFP), published on POCUS in the Journal of Family Practice, the textbook Ultrasound for Primary Care, the CAFP journal, and was founding secretary of the AAFP POCUS Member Interest Group. She has led POCUS workshops at national conferences including AIUM, AAFP, ACP, STFM, FMEC and WCUME.
Dr. Ramos has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations including Cuba Caribe (a performing arts, music and dance company), Women in Medicine (an advocacy group for sexual minority identifying women and gender expansive physicians) and chairs the POCUS Certification Academy Engagement Committee. Dr. Ramos graduated from medical school at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba, family medicine residency at the Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency, and global health fellowship at UCSF – Contra Costa
Kevin Bergman, MD

Dr. Kevin Bergman is the co-founder and co-CEO of Global Ultrasound Institute, a family physician, educator, and entrepreneur. He is a strong advocate for POCUS adoption across the continuum of care, with a particular focus on primary care, global health, and health equity. Dr. Bergman is an Associate Clinical Professor in the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine. He is the immediate past co-Director of the Ultrasound and Global Health programs at the UCSF Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency, a faculty member in the family medicine residency program, and previously served as an attending physician in the emergency department at Contra Costa County Hospital from 2009 to 2022. Dr. Bergman is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education and an official consultant to the International Consensus Conference on Ultrasound in Medical Education. He was the founding Vice-Chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Ultrasound Member Interest Group and co-authored the AAFP POCUS guidelines. Since 2011, Dr. Bergman has taught POCUS at various national and international conferences, including WINFOCUS, AIUM/SUSME, AAFP, EM Essentials, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Benjamin D. Beduhn, MD

Dr. Beduhn focuses on primary care and sports medicine. In his primary care clinics, he focuses on evidence-based medicine to serve patients. In his sports medicine clinics, he focuses on helping patients reach their mobility goals. He is particularly interested in musculoskeletal injuries and ways to use non-operative methods to help patients recover. This may include focused exercises, injections, and procedures. Prevention of future injuries is a large part of his practice. Dr. Beduhn is also interested in employing new technologies such as in-office ultrasound to help quickly diagnose pathology.
Dr. Beduhn is an active researcher at the University of Michigan. His research interests include point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), sports medicine, orthobiologics, and tendinopathies.
Oluseun Afolabi Olufade, MD

Assistant Professor of Orthopedics

Dr. Olufade is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Interventional Pain Medicine. He completed fellowship training in both Interventional Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine. During his fellowship training, he was a team physician for Philadelphia Union, major league soccer (MLS) team, Widener University Football team, and Interboro High School Football team. Dr. Olufade employs a comprehensive approach to treating sports-related injuries and spinal disorders by integrating physical therapy, orthotic prescription, and minimally invasive procedures.
Ian Thomas, MD

Dr. Thomas has a passion for using ultrasonography to promote health equity by overcoming barriers to quality care and counts writing a $50,000 grant to develop the point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum at his residency as one of his top professional accomplishments. He was awarded the American Academy of Physicians (AAFP) Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education, an honor given to only 12 Family Medicine residents in the country.
He was also awarded the Best Leadership Project Award and Best Overall Leadership Project Awards from the AAFP Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) out of thirty chosen in the country where he dedicated his project to building an ultrasound workshop for the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians in 2023 as well as raising funding for the ultrasound curriculum for the only Family Medicine Residency in Malawi, Africa.
After completing his Interventional Orthopedics/Sports Medicine Fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, he accepted a role as the Director of the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Curriculum at Western Michigan University Medical School and Grace Health Family Medicine Residency as well has opened his own practice Thomas Sports and Regenerative Orthopedics (TSARO).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

Acquire foundational knowledge of ultrasound physics, machine operation, probe selection, and common artifacts to build confidence in performing basic POCUS exams.
Obtain clear ultrasound images of key structures, including lung, cardiac, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) evaluations.
Integrate ultrasound findings into clinical decision-making for common conditions, such as evaluating lung sliding, assessing free fluid in the abdomen, and identifying early pregnancy structures.

Written cancellations received after April 8, 2025, will not receive a refund. All cancellations must be received by the AIUM via e-mail to learn@aium.org. In the unlikely event that the program is canceled, seminar registration fees will be fully refunded.
