Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the utility of intestinal ultrasound (IUS) in clinical practice in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other gastrointestinal diseases;
  • Compare the role of IUS in IBD diagnosis and monitoring with other cross-sectional imaging modalities;
  • Acquire didactic knowledge on the use and features of IUS for assessing normal bowel, including differentiating the colon from small intestine, and gastrointestinal pathologies with a focus on inflammation and complications in IBD;
  • Establish the framework needed to interpret findings seen on IUS;
  • Illustrate the fundamental features of IUS to assess bowel pathologies, including those of IBD Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis;
  • Recognize the features and findings of common extra-intestinal pathologies that can arise from routine bowel examinations (eg complications of bowel disease, genitourinary conditions, hepatic disease);
  • Review indications for IUS, including monitoring of IBD and role in therapeutic decisions, and relate those indications to pathologies that may be seen on imaging; and
  • Explain the potential role of IUS in the differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant abdominal pain.
