Senior membership is a status that is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated substantial accomplishments in the field of medical ultrasound and is a way for the AIUM to recognize that accomplishment.
Senior members receive additional benefits such as:
-Name listed on the AIUM website as a senior member under the
“Leadership” link;
-Badge ribbon at the AIUM Annual Convention;
-Priority selection for committee appointments;
-Name published in
Sound Waves Weekly as a new senior member; and
-First step toward AIUM
fellow nomination eligibility.
Senior Membership QualificationsPhysicians, Sonographers/Technologists, Scientists, and Others • Three consecutive years of participation as an AIUM general member at the time of application;
• Five years of experience in ultrasound;
• AIUM organizational participation;
• Demonstration of substantial accomplishment in at least 1 of the following areas as it relates to ultrasound:
o Scientific investigation or
o Sustained teaching;
• Possession of 1 of the following advanced degrees, certifications, or equivalents: DO, DPM, DVM, EdD, MD, MS, PhD, RDMS, RDCS, RVT, ROUB, ScD, and ScM; and
• Two letters of recommendation from current AIUM senior (
view current list) or fellow (
view current list) members.
Ultrasound Industry Professionals • Five consecutive years of participation as an AIUM general member at the time of application;
• Five years of experience in ultrasound;
• Substantial AIUM organizational service;
• Two letters of recommendation from current AIUM senior (
view current list) or fellow (
view current list) members ; and
• One letter of recommendation from AIUM leadership (including the AIUM chief executive officer, current committee chairs, and current Executive Committee or Board of Governors members).
Senior Application ProcessAn announcement is made in the fall of every year to inform the membership that senior membership applications will be accepted for those who meet the above criteria. After December 31, applications and associated materials are reviewed by the AIUM membership committee, and recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Governors for approval. Applicants will be notified of their status after the Board of Governors meeting at the AIUM Annual Convention.
