The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine is a multidisciplinary association dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education, research, development of guidelines, and accreditation. The AIUM's membership consists of more than 7,200 physicians, sonographers, scientists, engineers, other health care providers, manufacturers of ultrasound equipment, and students.

AIUM ultrasound practice accreditation is a voluntary peer review process that encourages practices to meet or exceed nationally recognized standards in the performance and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound. View Accreditation

Using ultrasound for entertainment purposes has long been a controversial issue within the ultrasound community, as many, including the AIUM, are concerned that this casual use of ultrasound may have harmful repercussions. An important part of the AIUM's mission is to promote the safe and effective use of ultrasound. The Bioeffects Committee of the AIUM is charged with continually monitoring and evaluating research to determine the interaction of ultrasound with biological tissues and its clinical significance. These literature reviews are periodically published in the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.

As part of the ongoing effort to assess the safety of diagnostic ultrasound, the AIUM periodically sponsors consensus conferences of multidisciplinary ultrasound experts to assess the evidence associated with the bioeffects of ultrasound. The resulting consensus documents provide information such as an overview of the scientific information, the range of ultrasound bioeffects in vivo, the relevance of these effects to diagnostic imaging, summary statements, recommendations and conclusions concerning the safety of diagnostic ultrasound.
